Divleena Singh

I'm Divleena, an architect, maker-designer & part-time facilitator from India. My work lies at the intersection of design, sculpture and using making as a research tool to discover fundamental, self-organised forms and constructions. Previously, I've been hosted by artist and maker-space residencies in Austria (Bildingship, Medienfrische), Malta (Valletta Design Cluster), and Cyprus (Thinker Maker Space). At Thinker Maker Space, in my exhibition, 'Soft Nothings' (2024) I showcased a range of visually and materially lightweight, soft constructions: free-form as well as those based on geometrical forms, including knots based on a combination of fabrication and computational simulations. Structures in spaces and products are conventionally rigid but I'm interested in exploring such 'soft structures' that may model biological behaviour (biotensegrity, Scarr 2024). Rigid elements like sticks are designed to float in, cables, or soft material membranes like fabric. At Center Rog, Slovenia I am exploring the potential of machine knitting as a construction method for soft structures with movable/analogue-interactive features, executing prototypes, and contributing to the public program by sharing possibilities of using knits with rigid components.

Maker in Residency between 5 May and 31 May 2025.
